We are pleased to announce that this year Pierce's Busing will be providing morning, noon and after school bus runs for the children in the back arm area. The school council is hosting a Snowflake Ball this Friday, February 5th for Kindergarten to Grade 6 from 6:30-8:30pm. This is a formal event and admission in $5.00. This will include the dinner and dance. Students will be served hot dogs and drinks and there will be a refreshment table as well.

At SJE again this year the Student Council are asking all students to please donate a pair of mittens to the mitten trees before Christmas break. All mittens will be donated to the less fortunate children over Christmas holidays.

Doors for the matinee today will open at 12:30 and the show will start at 12:45. This will be an adult and preschool show as well as a chance for the students at SJE to see the show. Admission is 1.00 and tickets will be sold for a door prize as well as The Best Seat in the House for the evening show.

All costumes for the Christmas concert will be provided to those who have speaking parts in the musical. Students can wear their normal Christmas concert clothing as all costumes will go on over what they wear. Elves will be provided with an elf hat and an elf shirt will hang from their neck (made from bristol board - similar to a necklace), reindeer will wear antlers and a bristol board necklace of a reindeer belly, birds will be provided with a head piece and wings, Twinkle and Shine will both wear stars, the trees will be provided (to hang around their neck), and the animals of the forest will all have small masks. Santa will be wearing a Santa suit. These costumes will not be sent home; teachers will be backstage helping students get ready before they go out to speak.

Tickets for our annual 50-50 Christmas Giveaway will be available on Monday (14th). All proceeds will be divided as 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winnings for three lucky people in the community. This is the SJE way of saying thanks for our fundraising this Fall.

Ms. Hatcher will be starting an extra-curricular performance choir for students in grades 4-6. Please be reminded that our students at SJE are typically bussed home or have parents pick them up for lunch. We encourage this at SJE because it gives each child a break from school and also reduces the number of children that staff need to supervise especially on days when other lunchtime events are occurring. Supervision will be provided for children who cannot go home due to lack of home supervision and care during lunch hour or when children have to stay to participate in school events.

This event will expose our children to many great cultural traditions celebrated by the residents of Conne River including traditional drum dancing, bone carving, aboriginal games and craft making. Due to the high volume of business for our volunteers we have decided to let the grades 4-6 students come to the canteen to buy recess - no need for order forms. We have been experiencing an increase in the numbers of students that are being consistently late for school either in the mornings, afternoons and sometimes both. Just a reminder that children need to be in school at homeroom time when instruction begins. I would like to remind all parents and visitors that unless given permission, vehicles are not to drop off, pick up or visit any students in the area off the school bus loading zones at any time. Unauthorized vehicles are also not to travel around the school building and compromise student safety outside. Thank you.

As a part of our Safe and Caring School practices, we are requesting that all visitors to the building report to the main office if they need to communicate to a child that is in class. This would include the picking up/dropping off of a child, delivering of messages to a child or even such things as gym clothes, lunches, school materials, or to see a staff member, etc. This will avoid classroom disruptions, lost instructional time and ensure more order and safety for our children.
Parents and visitors are always welcome to SJE of course. The school secretary or someone at the office should be there to assist you in any way they are able.

Our young runners in grades 3-6 will begin their first of many practice runs today. Coaches this year are Mrs. Baker and Mrs. Snook. Please make sure that on run days your child comes prepared with light running clothes, especially sneakers and that they have rides home arranged ahead of time. The primary and elementary cross country running championships will take place in early October. Go Seahawks!

This Wednesday (10th) evening at 6:30 p.m. is a chance for parents to meet their child's teacher, see their classroom and to go over expectations and directions for this school year. There will be no common session in the gymnasium....parents are to go straight to their child's classroom. All parents should attend this session.

Last year Jeanine Hynes was the Kindergarten Play 4 Fun facilitator at SJE. It was a program that the children enjoyed immensely. We are currently looking for a facilitator for this year's program. Our annual Thanksgiving vegetable sale will be going ahead again this year for early October. Order forms will be sent home with students. All proceeds go towards supporting student activities and special school events outside of the regular curriculum. Thanking you in advance for your continued support.

I would just like to remind parents that at SJE students are permitted to stay for lunch if for whatever reason (ie. they have sports at school, parents both working during lunch, parents out of town, etc.) they cannot go home that day. We ask for cooperation with this as we are very limited with space in the lunchroom, especially when lunchtime activities and sports begin. Thank you.

Kindergarten school time will be from 8:20 a.m. to 11:10 a.m. This will be the same as last year. Children on the North and South Side bus runs will be bussed to and from the school at this time.

September 3rd will be the first official day of school for students this year. Busses will begin North Side and South Side bus runs at 8:10 a.m. and the doors will open for all students at 8:20. Students are asked to report to their homerooms first for registration. There will be an assembly at 9:00 and parents are welcome to attend.

All library books belonging to the school should have been returned by last Friday. You are encouraged to ensure any books your child has belonging to the school are returned as they are very costly. Just a reminder that the doors will open today for the matinee at 12:30 today and we hope to start at 12:45. Admission is $2.00 for adults and children are free. As in the past, the doors will open for the evening show at 6:00 and showtime is 6:30. Admission will be $3.00 and this show is for adults only.

SJE is pleased to announce that they will be hosting a ball hockey jamboree at the Conniagre Arena this upcoming Thursday from 1-4p.m. This will be for members of the school's ball hockey clubs and will also include students from Bay d'Espoir Academy, Fitzgerald Academy and St. Anne's. There will be no admission for parents and relatives who would like to watch some exciting ball hockey.

To minimize the traffic over tomorrow's water break, there will be no classes in the a.m. for North and South Side students living past Mrs. Stones house. All employees and all students in the arm area will have classes but there will be no regular bus runs.
Kindergarten students are to report for the afternoon session only. Their pics will be done at 12:40. Following their pictures North and South side students can have their Spring portraits done. Arm area kids will have their pics taken in the a.m. These pics are just Spring portraits and are optional.

Despite the town's planned water outage for North & South Side residents tomorrow, our district has decided SJE will remain open for regular classes. The town will be restricting traffic in the water break area to cars and trucks only. There will be no regular bus runs during this interruption so parents are asked to make alternative arrangements to ensure children get to school. It is hoped the problem will be quickly corrected in the morning hours. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

The grade 4-8 Annual Spelling Bee is set for April 30th. The top five written bee spellers in each class will represent their respective grades in this verbal competition which always promises to be competitive and exciting! Good Luck to all contestants.

Over Easter break we will have a number of our boys and girls in grades 4-6 compete in the HNL provincial hockey championships for their divisions. Our atom players will travel to St. Johns and our Pee Wee players will travel North to St. Anthony. Safe travels and best of luck are extended to all players, coaches and parents attending these tournaments.
